Todays fiddle friday is covered with gesso. I stashed away lots of gesso for decades because I loved to paint with oil and acrylics once. Now it comes in handy and I can use all my pretty gesso for mixed media and stamping. For more gesso related English please scroll down. Heute ist wieder Frickel-Freitag und ich habe mit Gesso gespielt. Gesso besitze ich schon ewig. Aber das auf Papier zu schmieren…darauf wäre ich wohl nie gekommen, wenn nicht die liebe Heike vom Challengeblog Paperminutes schon vor Monaten mit dem Zeug rumgematscht hätte. Im ersten Moment dachte ich noch…“Gesso hä?“. Google hat mir dann erklärt, was das überhaupt ist. Gesso, so was ähnliches wie Kreide in Kleber. Wikipedia weiß mehr (klick). (die englische Version ist besser, war ja klar)
Ulkigerweise fand ich noch Vorräte in meinem Keller, denn ich habe vor ewigen Zeiten damit Leinwände grundiert. Dafür ist das Zeug gedacht. Aber wir wären ja keine Stempel-Kreativen, wenn wir das nicht zweckentfremden könnten. Und woher soll auch das Gesso wissen, wo wir es draufschmieren, gell?
Man kann Gesso im Grunde wie Acrylfarbe benutzen, nur deckt zum Beispiel weißes nicht hundertprozentig, wenn man es mit dem Pinsel aufträgt (meines zumindest nicht). Schwarzes Gesso deckt wie Hölle, und man kann genial damit spielen, doch das zeige ich euch ein anderes Mal. Heute benutze ich das Gesso wie gehabt zum Grundieren, doch diesmal auf Pappe. Es gibt drei Gründe, einen Maluntergrund mit Gesso zu grundieren: Eine neutrale Farbe zu erhalten, die Saugfähigkeit des Untergrundes zu vermindern (geht gegen null danach) und den Untergrund für den folgenden Farbauftrag griffiger zu machen.
Die im Gesso enthaltene Kreide sorgt dafür, dass Acryl- oder Ölfarben besser haften. Und was eine Leinwand tut, das kann Pappe schon lange. Ich habe in meinen Papier-Mülleimer im Bastelzimmer gegriffen und die folgenden Pappstücke herausgefischt. Eines davon ein Gutschein für Schuh-Rabatt. Wer braucht denn so was? Genau- wir Bastler!
Gesso is meant to be a primer for surfaces. For oil paintings or acrylic ones you have to prime the canvas. The gesso prevents the paint to soak into the canvas and gives the surface a better grip. What works for canvas works for paper and card board as well (and many other surfaces too). For my todays project I prepared some scratch paper from my paper bin in my craft room.
You can paint with the gesso just like you paint with acrylics, my white gesso was slightly transparent, my black one wasn’t, I guess it depends on what brand you use. Try to find what you are comfortabel with.

Wenn eure Pappe sich stark wellt, dann sprüht sie von hinten leicht mit Wasser ein, das entspannt das Papier. Ich habe auch Reste von starkem Transparentpapier angemalt, welches sehr empfindlich gegenüber Feuchtigkeit ist… wenn man das Wellen der Pappe/ des Papiers verhindern möchte, kann man das Papier auch auf einen Untergrund (hier MDF) mit Klebeband aufkleben. Links das aufgeklebte, rechts das nicht aufgeklebte, bemalte Papier.
If you paint your cardboard/paper it may corrugate. To prevent this, moisten the paper a bit from the back. To make sure the paper doesn’t bend at all (like my vellum in the picture) tape it to a sturdy surface that can stand becoming wet. On the left you can see painted vellum that has been taped before it was painted.
Let your gesso painted papers dry completely. Then you can play with them like you play on canvas or otherwise prepared surfaces. I used glass paints from Marabu to paint some tags, I coated my cardboard by applying the paint with my fingers (wearing gloves) and got some nice effects. After the paint has dried you can stamp (with Brilliance or StazOn) or stencil the paper. I have cut the tags with a very old die cut from Ellsion, I don’t know if those are still available.
Wenn der Gessoauftrag komplett getrocknet ist kann man weiter arbeiten. Ich habe hier Glasmalfarben von Marabu mit dem Finger (mit Latex-Einmalhandschuhen) aufgetragen, so konnte ich verschiedene Effekte erzielen und experimentieren. Ist diese Farbe ebenfalls getrocknet, kann man darauf stempeln (Stempelkissen: Brilliance, StazOn) oder schabalonieren. Danach habe ich die Pappe mit einer alten Stanze von Ellison geschnitten, da ich diese bereits vor 2000 gekauft habe, weiß ich nicht mehr ob es die heute noch gibt.
Mit dem Gesso kann man auch malen. Eigentlich logisch. Hier habe ich ein Motiv aufgestempelt, mit Gesso übermalt und nochmal darüber gestempelt. So erziele ich ein Motiv, welches wie weiß coloriert wirkt, es geht aber viel schneller.
If you want to achieve some highlights you can use the gesso as paint. I painted a stamped image and stamped again, that gives a nice and quick effect.

Das Tag rechts unten ist dann auch ein wenig schabloniert, wie es bei Paperminutes in der aktuellen Challenge gefordert war. Ich habe die schablonierten Quadrate noch leicht mit Brilliance eingefärbt und mit einem schwarzen Schatten versehen, was mir besser gefiel. Ebenso ist das kleine Segelschiff und die Möwen mit der Hand gezeichnet, so was hatte ich nicht im Fundus. Und wozu bin ich Stempel-Designer? *ggg*
The tag on the right bottom was stenciled, like the challengeblog Paperminutes wanted us to do this week (click). I added some blue Brilliance and shadows to the small squares by hand, and sketched the sailing boat and the seagull on another tag. TheoreticallyI could draw everything myself, all the drawings for the stamps I used came from my desk except the shells.
But I went on experimenting and used a technique I recently saw in a live stream of the company Spellbinders, Check this one out: Try it tuesday watercolor techniques. Ken is doing the same thing with a watercoloured paper what I did today with a gesso painted paper. The idea behind this is to make your own ‚duo core‘ paper, that you can emboss and get the colour pop out by sanding it. Here is my vellum. See the crisp white edges? Its from the tape, a nice effect I have to keep in mind.
Man kann mit Gesso weiter spielen. Vergangenen Dienstag sah ich in einem Live-Stream der Firma Spellbinders eine tolle Idee. Schaut euch die Aufzeichnung des „try it tuesday watercolor techniques“ mal an. Im Grunde geht es darum ein Papier an der Oberfläche einzufärben, um es dann zu embossen und zu schleifen, damit die Originalfarbe wieder rauskommt. Das macht echt Spaß! Seht ihr die harten, weißen Kanten auf dem Transparentpapier? Da klebte das Tesaband und hat es quasi abgedeckt. Die Idee muss ich mal im Hinterkopf behalten, beides zu kombinieren.
Ich habe auch normales Papier mit Gesso bemalt und embosst, aber mir gefiel das Transparentpapier besser, weil es sich so „scharf“ prägen lasst. Hier der Vergleich:

Nothing new so far. But I wanted to play with gesso, and when looking in my stash I found some black gesso too. Its so fascinating what you can do wth THAT, but I will spare you with my findings for today. Das alles ist nicht neu. Aber ich wollte es mal ausprobieren. Und es hat großen Spaß gemacht! Bei der Suche nach Gesso fand ich in meinen Vorrat auch schwarzes Gesso. Damit kann man noch viel tollere Dinge anstellen! Doch für heute soll es gut sein. Ich zeige euch noch schnell, was ich mit dem lila Gessopapier gemacht habe, was aus den Tags geworden ist (abandoned art, dazu ein andermal mehr!) und welche Stempel ich heute benutzt habe. Ich hoffe es hat euch gefallen.
