sketch101 sketchabilities – Dat Wasser vun Kölle

It’s time for another sketchabilities layout! For me, this layout was the most challenging so far, because the owner of the sketchabilities challenge blog – Karan Gerber – gave us a stunning sketch to play with. Like I said before I am a newbie to scrapbooking and I am keen to learn.
What can I say… I learn from the best, my colleagues at the sketchabilities blog show such a high standart of art and craftsmenship that is inspiring me so much! For more English please scroll down.

First take a look at sketch #101, isn’t it fabulous?

When I saw this sketch I knew I will have fun with it! I asked a friend to lend me some of her photos, Martina is a beautiful woman of my own age, and runs several blogs and youtube channels with tons of tips and tutorials about how to look amazing when you have passed your 40th birthday. I adore her work and it was an honor to me to play with her pictures.
Because Martina is addicted to beauty products, I wanted to reflect this in my layout. In addition I was keen to try some ideas I had in mind for ages: Prevent buying all that uber-expensive stuff from the latest papercraft industry and make some embellishments on my own. I will tell you more about it, but first let me show you how this first try turned out. Please let me tell you that I am NOT pleased with the result, but as I see creating as an ongoing process of improving your abilities, this first collage of mine won’t be the last, and I promise it will get better!

The overall appeal of the page is awefull, I am sorry to say so. I KNOW what went wrong: I lost the focus! It reminds me of the collages we made in school, during the 70s. Collages have been very popular back then, and nowadays they are coming back. But in different colours, styles and techniques. My collage was based on my idea to use material that comes for free: Adverts in magazines and prospects. Believe it or not, but the VERY FIRST old magazine I opened had a double page of this uber-pretty pink pots, tubes and applicators. Perfect! Even the text ‚paradiesisch‘ (be in paradise) was pretty in pink. I glued the cut outs to the page and the text on another cardboard. Using words from magazines and glueing them to cardboard gives nice and pretty results for free. I added some bling from my stash and here we are.
To finish the collage, I tried to put everything together with some extra paint. Like the last two times I used nailpolish to draw, plus some old eyeshadow. Can a collage match the topic ‚beauty products‘ more? Nope! I made a picture of what I used during the process.

Also immer sammeln, Leute!

The portrait of Martina was meant as part of Karans layout. To show you how the page looked after I made the basic layout I made another picture. If you like compare with sketch#101.

I think I should have stopped here. But I wanted to finish the sketch and added the images I intented to fit into the given layout. The pictures are really nice and I like each one of them, but like I said, the overal look of the whole thing is overdone. But I learn during the process, next time I won’t start like I did with sketch’101 and don’t add so much stuff in the background.
What I like about my layout are some small details. Like the text on the cardboard:

Another detail I really love are the bobbypins instead of clothpins to fix the pictures in the layout. I have put them to a girlish velvet ribbon accross the whole page. I really need to keep that in mind for future layouts! Plus it fits the beauty product topic of the page.

I hope you forgive my messy sketch#101 and my learning process. To finish today posting I want to note that the perfume bottle on the top left corner says ‚Aqua Colonia‘. This is another name for a famous perfume called ‚Koelnisch Wasser‘ (water of cologne) and because Martina lives in Cologne I wanted to refer the page to her. Thank you Martina for the beautiful images.
